Monthly expenses per person in Milan are estimated to be about € 800-1.000, depending on the accommodation solution you find. Below some examples are listed:
Accommodation: 400-600 €
Public transportation: 1 € (1-journey ticket); 30 € (monthly pass);
Food: Milk: 1,20 €/l; Bread: 3,50 €/Kg; Chicken: 8,00 €/Kg; Pasta: 1,00 €/Kg;
Spare time: Movie Theater: 7,50 €; Theater: 15-25 €; Fast food menu: 5,50 €; Pizza: 8-10 €
For the entire duration of the PhD course, all students will be supported by a fellowship, amounting to 18.500 € gross/year. Based on the Italian law, all fellowships are subject to detractions, calculated on the indicated amount. The detractions are variable and approximately estimated around 25% of the total amount. Therefore the monthly stipend is about 1200 € .
Students are supported through two different types of fellowship:
University fellowships: every year the University of Milan will pay a number of fellowships.
External fellowships: these are fellowships paid through research funds or other financial support of the single group leader.
Extensions of the fellowships are foreseen (max 12 months), but must be agreed with the supervisor and approved by the faculty of SEMM.
Partial coverage for periods abroad is also foreseen. Any tuition fee is covered by SEMM.
Fellows entering the SIPOD program will receive a competitive salary co-funded, when applicable (see eligibility), by the European Commission, in the context of the Marie Curie Action. Based on the Italian law, all fellowships are subject to detractions, calculated on the indicated amount. The detractions are variable and approximately estimated around 25% of the total amount. The monthly stipend is calculated to be around 2100€.
