The main aim of the course is to introduce students to the psychological theory and empirical research related to decision-making in health and medicine. The psychology of medical decision-making could be useful to understand patient, physician and caregiver’s behavior, develop effective interventions to optimize decision-making in health and medicine and improve diagnoses and treatment. Specific learning objectives are:

  • To understand the influence of social, organizational and informational factors on decision-making in health and medicine
  • To understand patient and physician vulnerability to cognition-based errors
  • To develop approaches and intervention to support physicians’ effective decision-making, improve patients’ engagement in making decisions and foster shared decision-making
